%X Abstract. This paper aimed to describe the methodology developed to drive Leaf Area Index (LAI), soil and vegetation data acquisition at the field level for Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) modeling at the regional scale. This approach has been used to minimize the uncertainty in GPP estimation for Amazon forest ecosystems. The definition of homogeneous landscape units after the Boolean integration of a vegetation thematic map and an altimetry map is important to characterize the spatial heterogeneity of Tropical forest ecosystems. The layer resultant of this integration was superposing in a TM-Landsat image to define sample sites. This methodology identified a large number of land units within and around Tapajós National Forest in Pará State. LAI values seem to be varying according to the spatial distribution of the landscape units. Therefore, to map landscape units using cartography information and also remote sensing image are the first step to describe the heterogeneity of Amazon ecosystems and to plan sample collection at field level for regional modeling purposes.
